A Saturday night at the drive-in movie theater may sound like a popular activity from days gone by, but with the ongoing pandemic’s social distancing requirements, drive-in movies are an excellent way to share an evening out with the family. On Saturday, USO Denver teamed up with Buckley’s Force Support Squadron for our third drive-in movie. The forty-foot screen and FM radio transmitters ensured everyone could see and hear Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2, and Darth Vader as Star Wars: A New Hope played despite the rain that tried, unsuccessfully, to dampen our spirits.

Families arrived to surprise greetings by Darth Vader and Princess Leia as they were directed to parking spaces with light saber pointers. While we waited for it to get dark enough to start the film, we held a car decorating contest and our team delivered treats to each vehicle, thanks to the support of Grand Canyon Univeristy. The “light saber” popsicles in particular were a hit even though the rain had already cooled everyone off.

Once again our team enjoyed the opportunity to provide a morale-boost for everyone involved. The USO’s mission of connection is not deterred by social distancing; in fact, our military service members and their families know we’re by their side through innovative programming no matter the distance.
